EL Path to Biliteracy

EL Path to Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district, or state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The  vision behind this award is to help students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual. Research at Summit Schools has shown that checking in with EL students to explain the award, the steps to earning it and outlining their personal progress toward this goal has increased their sense of self-efficacy and their sense of the relevance of school.  The check in can be done prior to an assessment as a source of motivation or at any time to encourage sense of belonging and a growth mindset.
