Focus Area design update preview

Focus Area Design Update We are launching a redesign to the student Focus Area page on Thursday, November 30. Your students will see an announcement and walkthrough on the platform introducing them to the page the first time they see it.

Why are we making this change? We heard your feedback that students:

  1. Often find the long list of resources overwhelming
  2. Take a long time to realize that the right-hand panel can be used to ‘filter’ the resources by objective
  3. Do not often recognize that their current assessment scores, split by objective, should be used to focus their attention
  4. Do not always notice the ‘Diagnostic Assessment’ button
  5. Do not easily remember which resources they have already visited, especially when coming back to the same Focus Area page on multiple days.
  6. Want to remember that certain resources on the page are more ‘useful’ than others- these might be resources they have found particularly resonant, or that have been suggested to them by teachers or other students
  7. Would like to see more learning resources visible ‘above the fold’ (without scrolling)
  8. Will request Content Assessments multiple times without studying in between or using the Diagnostic Assessment to prepare
  9. Desire to seek help from other students who have succeeded in the same Focus Area and are qualified to provide help

What is changing:

  1. All “Focus Area information” (e.g., description, key terms) now lives in the right-hand information box rather than taking up space above learning resources.
  2. Each objective now lives in an ‘accordion’ design, which means it can be opened and closed with a mouse click. This allows students to focus on each objective in turn as needed, or to expand all resources and choose from a longer list.
  3. Each objective is now numbered to make navigation easier.
  4. The Diagnostic Assessment button is now larger and more central to the page, to encourage students to take their Diagnostic Assessments earlier in the process.
  5. The diagnostic and Content Assessment scores for each objective are now larger and easier to find, to encourage students to use their prior scores to focus their attention.
  6. The text size for each resource is now slightly smaller, allowing more resources to be visible at the same time, and many more to be visible without scrolling.
  7. When a student has visited a resource, he or she will see a ‘checkmark’ next to that resource. This allows both students and proctors to monitor which resources have or have not been visited.
  8. The button to request Content Assessments will now be located at the bottom of the Focus Area page, underneath all the relevant resources.
  9. Students can now see their collected assessment scores by clicking ‘see all takes’ at the bottom of the screen
  10. Lastly, we are adding the ability for students to identify students who have succeeded on particular Focus Areas, so that they can collaborate with one another. For more information about the student collaboration feature, please visit this document.
