What is Facebook's role in the Summit Learning Platform?

Summit partnered with engineers at Facebook to develop, implement and maintain the Summit Learning Platform. The Summit Learning Platform has always been separate from Facebook and use of the tool doesn’t require a Facebook account. In the 2017-18 school year, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will become Summit's long-term engineering partner on the Summit Learning Platform, and Facebook will no longer play a role in the Platform. Summit subscribes to the Future of Privacy Forum's Student Privacy Pledge, which means that anyone working on the Summit Learning Platform is required to handle student data in accordance with the Pledge.

What happens with the student data?

The data will remain on Summit’s Amazon Web servers where it has always lived. Summit permits Facebook access to student data only as necessary to help provide and improve the Summit Learning Platform. Facebook access to that data will end when work on the project concludes.
