Editing and Deleting Courses

Overview

Any teacher with the Curriculum Author role can edit a course that you’re teaching so that it’s personalized to your class’s needs. Editing a course means adding or removing Projects and Focus Areas, rearranging the order that students work on Projects and Focus Areas, or building an entire course out from scratch.

Before making edits to a course, we recommend:

  • Consult with your school’s Success Manager before making edits to make sure that the changes to the course maintain the same level of expectations and rigor.
  • Check if the Courses, Projects, or Focus Areas are used by other teachers. If the curriculum is shared between teachers, the edits will affect those teachers and their classes.

In this article, you'll find instructions on how to:

Add a Project to your course

1. From the Course page, click "Edit Course".

2. In the Projects section, click "Add".

3. You can search for projects using keywords, or by filtering for Cognitive Skills, Standards, Grade Levels, or Subjects.

4. Check the box to the right of each project you'd like to add.

5. Click "Add."

6. At the top of the page, click "Finish Editing".

Add a Focus Area to your course

1. From the course page, click "Edit Course".

2. To the right of Focus Areas, click "Add".

3. You can search for Focus Areas using keywords, or by filtering for Standards, Grade Levels, or Subjects.

4. Check the box to the right of each Focus Area you'd like to add.

5. Click "Add".

6. At the top, click "Finish Editing".

Note: The number of Focus Areas in your course may depend on the complexity, or on the breadth of content covered in the course. Adding new Focus Areas to a course impacts other teachers at your school, as well as students enrolled in the course.

We recommend setting your students up for a successful academic year by making an informed judgment about what will be sufficiently challenging for your students to manage. We suggest adding between 6-15 Focus Areas for a course. At Summit Learning, students are typically expected to study and pass 1-2 Power Focus Areas per week as they progress from 6th grade to 12th grade.

Rearrange the order of Projects or Focus Areas

While Focus Areas technically do not have due dates, you can still rearrange the order of how they appear on a student's Year page. Rearranging the order affects the order in which the line will pass each Focus Area.

  1. Go into any course
  2. Click "Edit Course" in the top-right corner
  3. From here, you can click the dots on the left and then drag and drop the Projects or Focus Areas into the order you want
  4. Click "Finish Editing" on the top right

Note that you can also change what type of Focus Area it is (Power, Additional, or Challenge) by dragging it into the appropriately labeled box.  When you are done, click "Finish Editing" at the top of the page to save.

Delete a Project or Focus Area from your course

  1. From the course page, click "Edit Course"
  2. Hover over the Project or Focus Area you'd like to delete, then click ✕
  3. Click "Finish Editing" to return to the course page

Note: If you accidentally delete a Project or Focus Area, you can click Undo immediately afterward to restore that Project or Focus Area.

  1. Click on the Curriculum section from the menu on the left, and select Courses
  2. Click the course that you'd like to delete, then click Edit Course
  3. Click Settings in the upper right
