How do I create and add Focus Areas?

You can create new Focus Areas, or add existing Focus Areas, to any course that you've created.

To create a new Focus Area:

  1. From the course page, click Edit Course
  2. In the Focus Areas section, click Add
  3. In the bottom left, click Create new
  4. Enter the name of your Focus Area
  5. Select a level for the Focus Area (Power, Additional, or Challenge)
  6. Click Create Focus Area
  7. At the top of the Edit Course page, click Finish Editing

To add an existing Focus Area:

  1. From the course page, click Edit Course
  2. To the right of Focus Areas, click Add
  3. You can search for Focus Areas using keywords, or by filtering for Standards, Grade Levels, or Subjects
  4. Check the box to the right of each Focus Area you'd like to add
  5. Click Add
  6. At the top of the Edit Course page, click Finish Editing

Note: The number of Focus Areas in your course may depend on the complexity, or on the breadth of content covered in the course. Adding new Focus Areas to a course impacts other teachers at your school, as well as students enrolled in the course. We recommend setting your students up for a successful academic year by making an informed judgment about what will be sufficiently challenging for your students to manage. We suggest adding between 6-15 Focus Areas for a course. At Summit Learning, students are typically expected to study and pass 1-2 Power Focus Areas per week as they progress from 6th grade to 12th grade.
